Introduction

Most of the lessons will teach you several Devanagari concepts or letters. Each lesson will be finished with a brief review and then followed by a quiz.

Instructions

To begin a particular lesson, choose the lesson name from the list at the left of the Devanagari Tutorial Main Page. Then, after reading that lesson's introductory statements, choose a particular concept from that lesson. I recommend you start with the first lesson and read that lesson's subjects in order.

In a particular subject, simply press the button labeled Next to proceed to the next subject. Once you are finished with a lesson, you may select Up to return to the lesson's menu, and then Up again to return to the Devanagari Tutorial Main Page from which you may choose another lesson.

Seeing the English Name of a Letter

These lessons promote your reading the Devanagari script as it is actually written, without English aids. However, should you forget which letter is represented by a certain character, simply position your mouse over the letter and the letter's "name" will appear above it. For example, position the mouse cursor over the letter ka to see its name. This feature is supported from both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, along with most other browsers.

Hearing the Sound of a Letter

Most of the letters are sound-enabled. If you don't remember the sound a certain letter represents, simply click the letter with the mouse. For example, click on the letter ka to hear its sound. If this is your first time to listen to a particular letter, you may have to wait briefly while that letter's sound is downloaded.

System Requirements

Reading the Devanagari tutorial may be performed on any browser which supports graphics and JavaScript. Most newer browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x and above, along with Netscape Navigator 3.x and above, should allow you to read the tutorial with no problems.

To listen to the sound of a letter, your browser must support Java 1.1 or greater. Examples of browsers which play the letter sounds correctly include Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 and above and Netscape Navigator 4.04 and above.
