Introduction

Most of the lessons will teach you several Devanagari concepts or letters. Each lesson will be finished with a brief review and then followed by a quiz.

Instructions

To begin a particular lesson, choose the lesson name from the list at the left of the Devanagari Tutorial Main Page. Then, after reading that lesson's introductory statements, choose a particular concept from that lesson. I recommend you start with the first lesson and read that lesson's subjects in order.

In a particular subject, you may select the next subject in order from the list at the left of the lesson. You may also press the Next button to proceed to the next subject in the lesson.

Seeing the English Name of a Letter

These lessons promote your reading the Devanagari script as it is actually written, without English aids. However, should you forget which letter is represented by a certain character, simply position your mouse over the letter and the letter's name will appear above it. For example, position the mouse cursor over the letter to see its name. This feature is supported from both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer, along with most other browsers.

Hearing the Sound of a Letter

Most of the letters are sound-enabled. If you don't remember the sound a certain letter represents, simply click the letter with the mouse. Letters that are sound-enabled will indicate this with a dotted underline. For example, click on the letter to hear its sound.

System Requirements

Reading the Devanagari tutorial may be performed on any browser which supports Unicode and has fonts containing Devanagari characters. As of 2012 most modern browsers, including Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer, should allow you to read the tutorial with no problems.

To listen to the sound of a letter, your browser must support HTML5 Audio along with the MP3 format. Most modern browsers support HTML5, and as of late 2013, with the release of Firefox 21, all the major browsers support MP3 natively.
